The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions

What Is TSRGD?

The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016, commonly known as TSRGD, provide the regulatory framework governing traffic signs on or near roads in England, Scotland and Wales.

The regulations prescribe the design and conditions of use of traffic signs, including road markings, traffic signals and signs associated with pedestrian, cycle and equestrian crossings.

TSRGD is an important reference for those designing and implementing traffic management schemes and those involved more generally in road traffic regulation.

Why TSRGD Matters

Traffic signs need to communicate information quickly and consistently to road users.

TSRGD provides the regulatory framework that determines what prescribed traffic signs mean, how they are designed and the conditions governing their placement and use.

By establishing a nationally consistent signing system while allowing defined flexibility, the regulations help traffic authorities and practitioners develop appropriate signing arrangements for different road environments.

TSRGD & Chapter 8

TSRGD and Chapter 8 perform different but complementary roles within temporary traffic management.

TSRGD provides the regulatory framework governing prescribed traffic signs, signals, markings and their conditions of use.

Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual provides guidance for the design and operation of temporary traffic management arrangements at road works and other temporary situations.

In practice, traffic-management planning therefore involves understanding both the applicable regulatory requirements and the relevant operational and design guidance.
